Sometimes a song has the power to transcend its original context and take on a life of its own. “Al Otro Lado Del Rio,” written and performed by Jorge Drexler for the 2003 film The Motorcycle Diaries, has represented hope, solidarity and perseverance since it first appeared. Winner of the 2005 Academy Award for Best Original Song, it was also the first Spanish language composition to be nominated for song of the year, and it made history when it won; like the song itself, its composer and his co-producer, Leo Sidran, were underdogs. So for many reasons, “Al Otro Lado Del Rio” speaks of an optimism and determination to continue through adverse conditions.
Leo Sidran has now adapted the song into English, retitling it “Row On” (the literal translation of the original Spanish lyric “rema” is “row”). A Grammy winning composer himself, as well as a multi-instrumentalist and producer, Leo played virtually all the instruments on the recording and sang the main vocal. Then, when the physical distancing of Covid-19 quarantine became a reality, he invited collaborators from around the world to join him in singing the inspiring chorus. These 40 singers, musicians, producers, and friends filmed themselves at home and their heartfelt performances were woven into the song and the video.
Finally, Jorge Drexler himself contributed vocals, recorded from his home quarantine in Madrid.
Leo Sidran’s “Row On” breathes new life into this classic composition and contains the same beating heart as the original, a heart that speaks of determination and optimism in trying times.

LYRICS:
I dip my blade in the water
And hold on to both of our oars
I think that I see a light
Just on the other shore
Slowly but surely the night
Gives in to morning once more
I think that I see a light
Just on the other shore
After all, I believe
It’s not the time to give up
All these tears all these tears and I’m
Still an empty cup
I hear you whispering clear
Don't give up
Row on, row on
Row on
Down on this edge of the earth
what doesn’t kill you ignore
I think that I see a light
Just on the other shore
I row with all of my might
And smile down deep in my core
I think that I see a light
Just on the other shore
After all I believe
It’s not the time to give up
All these tears all these tears and I’m
Still an empty cup
I hear you whispering clear
Don't give up
Row on, row on
Row on
I dip my blade in the water
And hold on to both of our oars
I think that I see a light
Just on the other shore
